You can surf the sale right HERE!
What this means to you, dear friends, is that you can now be the owner of some killer flicks on the cheap. If you haven’t yet stepped into the world of high def, this is a good chance to start building up a collection while you can. For those in the know, it’s fuel for the fire. We’re here to help guide you into the great.
THE RED CIRCLE Recommends:
SHAUN OF THE DEAD & HOT FUZZ // $13.99 Each // $27.98 Combined
They’re two of the greatest films of this decade. Both of them come with an absurdly HUGE Special Features Section. Hot Fuzz alone has an hour and a half documentary and FIVE COMMENTARIES. And, since Universal has shown that they actually give a shit about their catalog titles, both of these films have a pristine transfer. And Hot Fuzz contains one of the loudest, most dynamic lossless audio tracks available on ANY high definition disc. These are simply must-haves.
An American Werewolf in London: Full Moon Edition // $13.99
We don’t need to explain how great this movie is (Editor’s Note: But we did ANYWAY). This is a must-purchase Blu, not only because the movie is the tops of the genre. The picture is pristine (Universal Strikes Again!), and the supplements are deep. Aside from the commentary and the standard featurettes, there are interviews with Rick Baker and John Landis as well. The latter contains one of the best schmuck jokes ever told. But, BUT – the feature really worth talking about is Paul Davis’ Beware The Moon (Editor’s Note #2: Review coming soon), a feature length documentary on everything American Werewolf. You get to follow a man as obsessed as you are with this amazing film. He pulls out all the stops – getting interviews with Landis, Baker, Naughton, Agutter, Dunne, producer George Folsey Jr, and cinematographer Robert Payter. Hell, he even gets the dart player from the Slaughtered Lamb. It’s a brilliant film at a brilliant price.
THE MONSTER SQUAD 20TH ANNIVERSARY // $12.49 // Pre-Order for 11.24.09
This one’s online only. In a rare move, Best Buy is allowing a sale to affect a pre-order product. And with a product as essential as The Monster Squad, we should not hesitate to thank them. For those who have never seen this 80′s gem, be prepared to witness Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Creature and The Mummy – vs. a group of eight year olds. Written by Shane Black (Yes, that Shane Black) and directed by Red Circle Fave Fred Dekker, Squad is ridiculous fun and quotable. This is essential viewing for all of you born in the late seventies and early eighties. Plus, if you get nitpicked about watching a movie as shameless as this one, you can always give the excuse that you’re learning about the anatomy of a Wolf Man.
300: The Complete Experience // $24.49
This may seem like an odd referral. But this is the news: Zack Snyder is the real deal. He’s Three for Three with Big-Budgeted Studio Films. This is a miracle. While 300 may have the least going on of the three, its still a fantastic visual feat and a film that is solidly behind a style. It’s not hard to hate the film based on the quality of people that think it’s the best thing to happen to shirtless men, but give this edition a shot. Despite a ton of featurettes on how the film was made, the best feature is one that was left off the previous editions. This film has a side-by-side comparison of the finished film with the original shots on the green screen. Belligerent male posturing aside (and the worst performance by Dominic West ever), this is a film to love on High Definition. The film is also ten dollars cheaper here than it is anywhere else, even the elusive Amazon.
Transporter 1 & 2 Double Pack // $18.80
Yep. It’s the best series of mindless action films featuring a gay man. Ignore the third one. Mostly because its terrible. Also because it makes the sexual orientation of Frank Martin obvious and wrong. This is an incredible price on two incredible B-Action flicks. The second one is in the Tom Nix Hall of Fame (Brain Rot Wing). It’s everything that was great about G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, only smallified. It’s one of the loudest and dumbest of ever – but it understands that its purpose is to dumb you into a enjoyment pile. These deserve your shelf space.
BONUS: POINT BREAK SPECIAL EDITION // $9.09!!!!
Hot Fuzz put this greatness back on the map. Keanu Reeves plays an FBI agent. Patrick Swayze plays a master thief. They have an unspoken love that will unfold. John C. McGinley plays a loud John C. McGinley. Someone throws a dog at someone. Keanu Reeves plays an FBI Agent. This is the best nine bucks you’ll ever lose.
Let us know if there’s any other great deals on great films to be found in this sale that we missed in the comments!
